When does ice fishing start in Minnesota?

I am writing a book, and part of the tale involves an ice fishing trip in Minnesota, but I need to know if ahead of schedule to mid December is too ahead of schedule to ice fish. Living in Florida, I’m not that familiar with the fishing seasons up there. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  1. BOBBER says:

I live in northern MN and there is bounty of ice by than. The season is open for game fish from may until Feb. For pan fish the season never closes.

I have seen fishable ice as ahead of schedule as end of Oct, or as late as mid Dec. Usually it is about the end of Nov when we start getting enough ice to walk on with nothing more than a bucket to sit on. It takes at least 4 inches to walk on. This last season I was out there with my shack in ahead of schedule Dec.
