What’s the best type of bait to use as a beginner off the Pensacola Fishing Pier?

We’re going fishing tomorrow with our children and we are both amateurs. I was wondering what the best type of bait would be to get the best catch. Not necessarily looking for anything huge. Just hoping to catch something. It’s for the “churn”! Lol! Thanks!

Although there ARE certain times of the year where a particular bait will perform better than a additional, the general bait that most people use, which will catch a variety of fish is original dead Shrimp, cut Squid and cut Mullet.

But, dead bait generally catches “trash fish” 75% of the time.

Trash fish- Hard Headed Catfish, Toad fish & Puffer’s.

Hard Head Cats tend to be what you catch on most Florida piers, (esp when you fish a bottom rig with dead bait).

You must be careful when removing Brine Cats from your hook. Their pectoral and dorsal fins have sharp, bacteria-clad spines and can easily stab you.

Here is a excellent website with info on Surf & Pier fishing Florida.
Although it is an Amelia Island, Florida website you can use 95% of it’s info.

    Hope this helps ya?

I have at times used cigar minnows rigged without weight. Hook it completely through the head and cast out to let drift. Watch for additional fisherman’s lines so they don’t cross. I have spellbound king & spanish mackeral and also some bonita. Check out the website below, go to beach button and click on the Pensacola Pier link for excellent info.

Live shrimp is best. They will catch about anything. Squid also work at certain times of the year.
