In Alabama, you have different types of licenses when it comes to fishing. First there is freshwater which is excellent for all freshwater fishing, then you have brine which is excellent for brine fishing of course. A lifetime license is only excellent for the fishing you bought it for. So, if you buy a lifetime freshwater fishing license, you can not use it to go brine fishing. Neither of them is excellent for wire basket fishing, that is a license all on it’s own. It depends on what state your from as to what your license will cover.
A annual license would be for one year. Depend on the state it is usually from spring of one year to spring of the next year. A lifetime license would be until the day you die.
In minnesota a fishing license weather lifetime or annual covers all types of fish. For a few species like trout you have to get a stamp. Hope this helps.
