  1. Jack Sprat says:

There are tuna in the Med, and dorado. Could it be that you’re not trolling quick enough for these species, or you’re not far enough offshore? Much less than 5knots and they won’t be interested in a skirted lure. Plugs and swimbaits are a better bet at slow speeds. If they’re around, and feeding, they’ll be chasing sprats to the surface which will in turn attract loads of seabirds. This is a dead giveaway. If you see this, don’t troll right through the middle of the shoal or you’ll disturb them. Stick to the edges, and you’re pretty much bound to catch one.

If there’re no seabirds around to indicate that the fish are near the surface, try fishing your lure down deeper. Use a deep diving plug or a downrigger set-up. This article http://www.go-brine-fishing.com/downrigger.html will show you how to set one up with an inexpensive planer on a separate line. Ahead of schedule morning at first light gets the best results.

Alternatively you could turn off the engine and use a jigging set up on the drift. One off the hi-speed Yo-Zuri jigs would be worth a try.

A standard action rod ( 6 to 7 feet long) and at least 250 yds of 30lb line will be fine. Either a heavy-duty fixed spool or a multiplier reel will complete the outfit.

Finally, be very careful. If there’s an offshore wind and your outboard fails you’ll be blown offshore very quickly. Make sure you’ve got a hand-held VHF or a mobile phone, and ideally an orange smoke flare, and tell someone you’re out there and what time you estimate to be back.

    Take care, and be lucky.

Incidentally, ever thought of fishing for bass with a live shrimp in the marina?
