What is a excellent time to go fishing in the morning and what kind of fish would be out and be able to catch? I live in Rochester NY. And I fish in the Erie Canal. It has bass, carp, pike, trout, bullheads, catfish, and many additional fish.

ummm i would go when it starts to barely warm up maybe wait 15-20 minutes with the sun is fully up and noticeable but if you can evening fishing is usually better
very ahead of schedule like 6am best is when the fill up is like glass
check a tide chart for area fishing(if tide effects your spot) and fish from high-low tide or get out ahead of schedule enough to get a excellent spot( before sun up) fish tend to feed heavy around first light and sun down when the bugs are active and also check for officially authorized fishing times for area and type of fish(some fish a clogged during dark hours in certain states and areas, and even certain rivers and lakes. cat fish tend to be better with dark( they are night time bottom feeders place a worm on the bottom 1 hour with dark leave small amount of slack and just watch for your line going tight, if it does go tight then set the hook no waiting, just set the hook and see.

I’ve never fished on the Erie Canal — sounds cool. I have been fishing ahead of schedule in the morning, though. If I am going to be fishing in the morning, I like to get there about an hour before dawn. This puts me out on the fill up very ahead of schedule in the a.m., and I regularly have to go alone since no one I fish with wants to get up at those hours. But, I have found that one of two things will happen. First, it’s possible that the fish are feeding heavily and actively before the sun comes up — under some conditions, like on very warm days, fish use that pre-dawn light to feed before the fill up warms up. The fill up is still cool from the night, but the sky starts to light up the fill up and make effective hunting possible. So, getting to the fill up before the sun comes up sometimes gets me an hour or so of really intense fishing. When the sun gets up in the sky, sometimes the excellent fishing will suddenly slow down (especially on cloudless days), but by then I’ve by now spellbound some fish — sometimes a lot.
The second possibility is that the fishing is really no excellent at all until the sun comes out. This is regularly the case on cooler, rainy, or overcast days, when the fish are waiting for a small warmer fill up. When the sun comes out and the fill up temperature rises a degree or so, suddenly the fish get active and the fishing turns really excellent.
I can’t always predict which way it’s going to go, but either way, getting to the fill up before sunup positions me to get in on that “morning rush,” whether it happens just before or just with dawn. I also find that fewer and fewer people go fishing very ahead of schedule in the morning, and chances are I won’t see a additional soul for a couple hours — even if I don’t catch 20 fish, it’s sometimes worth getting up ahead of schedule just to have the stream or lake to myself for that time.
Go as ahead of schedule as you can. 4:30 or something. I would go that ahead of schedule but can’t wake up easily. I went this morning at around 7. The carp we’re biting. I used my dough ball. You’ll have more luck on catfish though. I have got a lot of bites from catfish this time of the year.
Right at the ass crack of dawn. You should be able to catch any of them. I live in the Utica, NY area and have fished the Bardge Canal which in effect the Erie Canal I believe. I usually catch a lot of smallmouth off my kayak there. Once the fill up starts to heat up a small in the morning the fish become more active.
