I’ll be fishing mostly rivers and have never fished salmon before. I’m looking for decent equipment that won’t break the bank but I’m not looking for the cheapest thing either.
What is a good inexpensive rod/reel combo to get started salmon fishing with?

A seven foot standard action Shakespeare hideous stik with a Penn Captiva 6000 reel will be fine. Altogether that will run you a small over 100 dollars, but you might want to check eBay to find a used reel a bit cheaper.
hmm idk for reel but a huge game hideous stik are perfect…
it depends on the what you want to go with and your fishing experience. Typically people use either a spiraling reel/rod combo or a level wind reel/rod combo.
The spiraling setup is the simplest use and probably the cheapest. Spiraling reels cast simple but free spool poorly. This is a excellent choice if you want to chuck spoons and spinners as small weight is need for long casts.
Level wind reels are harder to cast and do take some practice to learn how to avoid birdsnests. They do free spool very nice and give a excellent controlled drift. If you want to float fish or bottom bounce this is a excellent rig.
Either setup can be had for under $100. Daiwa makes some nice spiraling reels and abu garcia makes some inexpensive but rock levelheaded level wind reels.
For rods look at the fenwick hmx, not dirt cheap but awesome rods and will last a long long time.
I’d suggest not cheaping out on the rod as you need to cast all day long and not a excellent rod will not wear you out.
