I’m fishing in a public lake that allows you to keep fish, there are a lot of bass and some crappie. I need to know how to target crappie and not bass, or at least how to catch huge crappie to keep for my 2 acre pond.

You would have the most success fishing a jig head with a curly tailed grub. For the larger crappies, and even bluegills, the 2″ grub is the best apposite for your fishing needs. I prefer a slower falling jig head, such as 1/16 oz., but smaller and larger work too, if the hook isn’t too large for the grub. You can also use 2″ tubes to replace the grubs, they work well too.
My favorite colors of grubs are : milktreuse, chartreuse, white, and yellow.
My favorite colors of tubes are : red & white.
Got some excellent responses but, just thought I’d make mention of what is known as a Blakely’s “Roadrunner” (link). Personally those things do me well with them Black “Papermouths”. Excellent luck with the stockin’ of your pound and hope the feedbacks/responses help ya’ out;)… < * { {{ >
Added: Also them live shiners, aka shad, aka minnows (as by now mentioned) with hook goin' up through the bottom of the lip and out the top and or hook frankly behind the dorsal fin (link) with the use of a' bobber will turn those Crappies heads...

If you make the pronouncement to go crappie fishing there are so many ways to make crappie rigs that catch crappie. You will need different crappie catching rigs for the different seasons of the and for different fishing situations. We have developed a list of crappie catching rigs that have worked for us in the past and they are shown below. Our tips contain many brilliant ropes tips using artificial crappie jigs, and crappie minnows which are called “Missouri minnows” in many parts of the country.
TIP#1 Use a “spin cast” reel fishing with a light weight graphite rod with 6-12# test line. (this is a bit more then most guys use.. but it works.
Tip#2 Buy some “Cajun Red 6 -12lb test line for your crappie fishing rig.(you can get away with the 6-12# test line since this crappie fishing rigged line is nearly invisible to crappie in the fill up.
TIP#3 Get some “Missouri minnows” (use when you have the wives and kids in the boat) You don’t catch as many fish but it simpler for the youngsters to use.
Tip#4 Use weights up to 1/4ounce.
TIP#5 Use crappie fishing jigs.
Tip#5a use plastic crappie fishing jig parts commonly referred to as “tubes” in the color of green, yellow and white
Tip#5b Use the smallest artificial minnow jigs you can find, with black tops and silver belly. The tale should go and get a lot of action in the fill up.
Tip#5c Use a Hair wrapped jig (these jigs are hard to fine)
Tip#5d Use jigs with a black body and yellow tail with a yellow head and black eyes.
Tip#6 The colder the fill up gets the smaller the line test you should use. Also fill up can see better in colder fill up so use 4lb test line in colder fill up temperatures.
Tip#7 Use spring loaded floats (bobbers, corks) That can slide up and down the line so you can easily adjust your fishing depth.
Tip#8 Change your crappie fishing rig by tying 2 or there jigs about 10 inches away from each additional. This gives you the capability to fish at different depths to find your crappie. You can place a weight on your line above the jigs or below the jigs. Try both methods until you start catching crappie.
We sincerely hope these crappie fishing tips will help you on your next fishing trip! have a wonderful day!

i have seen a small bit of a jig its a swimbait but they are kinda of expensive a dough per jig but it catches crappy. mostly used for bass but i bet the crappy will hit more depending on how it is presented
Crappie go for small minnows. Lip hook a minnow on a (pinkie) and cast out. Retrieve slowly. You may also get bass.
I would try a small road sprinter jig with a minnow.
I have excellent success using a jighead with a twisty tail grub or tube.
Jigs weightless.
