The decent lines arent that much more than the cheapies. Use stren or maxima line, its not terribly expensive and has good feel and casts well. If you are fishing for bigger game fish like salmon/steelhead, try flourocarbon line, its expensive, but the fish have a hard time seeing it. Use the lightest weight line that you can.
