Me and my wife are going to Mexico in a couple of weeks for a vacation. Besides parasailing, waverunners, etc I want to go deep sea fishing. We have 3 ports of call- Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta. Which would be the best place for fishing? How much would I estimate to spend for maybe a half day? What kind of fish would I be able to catch?
How much will it cost me to go deep sea fishing?

You can pay upwards of 3-4 hundred dollars for a pre registered guide to take you fishing (I fished in Cabo). Something I recently learned on a trip there over last spring break was that with the abundance of fisherman you have the option of walking down to one of the boat dock and asking around for someone to take you out (I was able to score a trip for 50). You can catch fisherman who normally take people but don’t currently have any “appointments” and get huge discounts by just showing up. When you go, depending on the types of tackle you bring along, you can get many of the bottom feeder fish (simple to catch yet tasty) or you could, if you have the rod for it, go for something a bit larger like marlin.
It really depends on what kind of trip your are looking for. They have trips with several people on a boat for as cheap as 50 bucks from what I have seen and also private charters for several hundred bucks. I’ll tell you from experience, taking a cheap trip with numerous people on board isn’t much fun and chances of catching much is slim. When I went it was just a total rip off i my opinion. We were crammed shoulder to shoulder, people’s lines were getting matted with eachother’s, and most people didn’t catch a thing. I did happen to catch one small guy, I believe it was called a Rock Bass (I’m not too familiar with brine fishing). Anyways, the trips for around 400 bucks is expensive but it would be well worth it to do it at least once. A lot of the charters will guarantee you catch a set number of fish and these are the “real” fish you reckon of when it comes to ocean fishing. Huge hard fighting fish, which for me would probably be a once in a lifetime sort of thing.
But as I said, I would stay away from the cheaper trips with several people. In my opinion, it was a mistake.
The best would be Cabo and Puerto Vallarta, estimate to pay around $300 USD for a excellent trip, on a half day trip you most likely will catch Tuna or Mahi Mahi (Dorado)
