Fishing the Bahama Flats

Follow the bonefish with your fly rod on Acklins Island, only five hours of flight time from New York, but a whole world away.

Day’s Catch, Isla Aguada, Campeché

Day's Catch, Isla Aguada, Campeché

In an attempt to get further into the weeds and closer to the mangrove lagoon, I dead-ended at this spot where some local fishermen were just returning from a morning on the water.

Clockwise from top-left;
1. Makeshift fish cooler from an old fridge, the narrow canal behind these guys is their access to a whole network of canals and islands.
2. As best I could tell, these were mostly gar, something that I thought I’d never see on a plate, but later in the day I saw some kids at a tope-sale (the speed-bump hawking of goods) with what looked like roasted gar on a stick.
3. Baby tarpon, another fish that had always been placed in the "no food value" group, more prized by game fishermen.
4. Only a few snook in the catch, maybe an incendental by-catch.
